The National Geographic Society commemorated the anniversary of reporter William Morton Stanley's journey across Africa to find Dr. Livingtone with articles and a television special.

I was commissioned to paint this illustration (one of three) for National Geographic World (now Kids), the organization's magazine for children. I depicted the famous "Dr. Livingstone I presume" moment. with a hail and freshly uniformed Stanley doffing his solar topi to an old, sick, threadbare Livingstone. After the famous meeting they spent many weeks together and became good friends.

Stanley went on to rule King Leopold's private African colony, the Belgian Congo. Livingstone died soon after Stanley's departure. His African companions buried the missionary's heart in Africa and then carried his wrapped corpse a thousand miles to the coast and accompanied it to England, for burial. I painted the illustration in oil on panel.
