This map is part of a multimedia presentation commissioned by the Institute of Current World Affairs in 2000 to commemorate its 75th anniversary. ICWA is a private, non-profit foundation that awards fellowships to people under 35 to immerse themselves in a foreign culture and subject for two years. Fellows submit monthly reports on their progress that are published by ICWA. Fellows work in many fields. Former fellows include Dr. Andrew Weil, who studied altered states of consciousness, Martha Farmelo, who explored gender relations amidst the imploding economy of Argentina, and Curt Gabrielson, who revamped East Timor's entire physics education curriculum.

This map is an homage to the dual-hemisphere nautical navigation charts of Mercator that guided early explorers around the world. The map shows where and when ICWA fellows did their work. I created the map in Illustrator. In the interactive Flash version, dragging the mouse over names activtes pop-up menus with details on Fellow activities, newsletters, biographies, and so on.
